How It Works

Calculates running or walking pace (time per unit distance). Formula: Pace = Time ÷ Distance. Also converts pace to speed and projects finish times for common race distances.

Tips & Shortcuts

A comfortable aerobic pace is one where you can hold a conversation.

1:00/km pace = 60 km/h (elite sprinting). 6:00/km is a comfortable recreational jog.

Negative splits (running second half faster) is the optimal race strategy.

Common Mistakes

Confusing pace with speed

Pace is time per distance (min/km). Speed is distance per time (km/h). They are reciprocals.

Training at race pace for all runs

80% of training should be at easy pace (60-70% max HR). Only 20% at hard efforts.

Frequently Asked Questions

A comfortable conversational pace for most beginners is 12–14 minutes per mile (7:27–8:41/km). You should be able to speak in full sentences.

Divide 60 by your pace in minutes. An 8:00/mile pace equals 60÷8 = 7.5 mph. For km, 5:00/km = 60÷5 = 12 km/h.

A 4-hour marathon requires a 9:09/mile pace (5:41/km) maintained for the full 26.2 miles.
